About Us

Melissa Compton is a Speech Pathologist who founded “Speech Pathology Feeding”. It is a private speech pathology practice that is a specialist clinic for babies and children up to 12 years of age with paediatric feeding difficulties.

Melissa Compton graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Speech Pathology from the University of Sydney, Cumberland College in 1997. Her career includes working at The Children’s Hospital Westmead, working as a school based clinician and working in community health. Melissa also worked in adult brain injury in the United Kingdom. Her passion for working in the field of paediatric feeding started at Westmead Hospital in 2001 where she worked in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Special Care Nursery and Westmead Centre For Oral Health. In 2004 Melissa was awarded the Winston Churchill Fellowship “To visit specialised multidisciplinary clinics studying new and innovative treatment methods for speech and swallowing” in Japan.

Melissa’s post graduate training and experience includes:

  • Feeding difficulties in neonates and babies with a range of medical conditions such as prematurity, gastroesophageal reflux (GORD), cleft lip and palate, chromosomal abnormalities and syndromes, brain injury, cerebral palsy
  • Tube feeding.
  • Paediatric dysphagia (aspiration) and Videoflouroscopy.
  • Paediatric tongue tie clinic at Westmead Centre for Oral Health.
  • Westmead Oral Motor Functional Therapy Clinic.
  • Feeding difficulties in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
  • Sensory Processing Disorders that impact on feeding.
  • Fussy feeders and extreme picky eating.
  • Cervical Auscultation.

Melissa has also provided education and training to Speech Pathologists and other medical professionals in the area of paediatric feeding and tongue tie.

Melissa has received extensive postgraduate training in paediatric feeding, including the Sequential Oral Sensory Feeding Program (SOS) and numerous other certified programs such as Gillian Griffiths and Denise Stapleton’s Sensational Mealtimes, Susan Ryan’s SOFFI Method, Joan Arvedson’s a Series of Advanced Workshops in Paediatric Feeding, Marsha Dunn Klein’s Get Permission Approach, and many more.

Melissa is an Accredited Practitioner at Westmead Private Hospital. She is able to assess and treat neonates in the Special Care Nursery presenting with feeding difficulties. Paediatrician referral only.
